Headmaster

Camillah Birony

Headmaster Birony is precisely the sort of prodigy one expects the Headmaster of a Magicademy to be. Master of countless spells and techniques, she served as Court Wizard of Orian-Daven only a brief few years after her own graduation from Diatu Magicademy until the resignation of Headmaster Sirion Trawls. In the search for a new Headmaster that followed, Birony outshone all other applicants by deploying what she termed “Thinking Spells” to outmaneuver her competition in not only magical aptitude, but political and diplomatic considerations as well. No one could contest that she was best for the job, and her five years of service afterwards have borne that out. Headmaster Birony was also key to the resolution of the Sundered crisis, suggesting education at Diatu as a solution and bringing countless different powers and governments on-board.

Her skills and successes must be emphasized, because no one finds Headmaster Birony any less than incredibly dubious in person. Quite aside from looking entirely too young for the position, she comes off as unbelievably absent-minded, to the point of being barely aware of her current location or actions. She’s been seen casting spells to find her hat when it’s on her head, has repeatedly attempted to move the ghosts of Makerion Keep into different buildings to ‘even out the hauntings’, and once accidentally transformed the Library of Starchime into a cheese wheel. Snide rumors circulate that her Thinking Spells are actually her own brain turned into magical energy, except former classmates of hers confirm a little grimly that no, she’s always been this way.

Headmaster Birony is remarkably difficult for students to get ahold of in ordinary capacities, but shockingly easy to run into during day-to-day life. Unfortunately for those who might wish to speak with her, her appearance generally means some sort of horrific devastation that becomes a much more pressing problem.

Professors

Antonius Trammel, Professor of Discovery
Professor Trammel lives naturally the way most Gekronus Maius wizards struggle to behave: impeccable conduct, flawless etiquette, politeness and respect to others at all times, and a wardrobe that suits him like you would not believe. He does all this with a smile and a charisma that makes everyone around him feel at ease. Even his familiar is a top hat, which very helpfully possesses the ability to deploy censor bars.

Aregway Porsfin, Professor of Fantastics

Professor Porsfin views himself in a battle for the soul of Fantastics; a magician’s magician, he relies heavily on Discovery magic to create performances for Fantastics magic to function, and openly grumbles at being required to teach “the old-fashioned way”. His dearest ambition is to become Valhudor Housemaster, which would at last give him the leverage to ‘revolutionize’ the school’s teachings.

Dumar Loshakle, Professor of Thaumaturgy

Ancient Professor Loshakle is the most stubbornly set in his ways of any professor of the school, and sadly, these ways include a hatred of Sundering and by extension the Sundered. If he had any more energy, he might be able to truly make life in Diatu Magicademy hell for those of his House or even Sundered students in general, but he hasn’t got more in him than grumbling and cantankerous verbal putdowns. He openly insists he’ll be retiring at the end of the year and constantly demands various people be put in his place, most of whom no one has ever heard of. Since he's been doing this for about seven years now, no one really takes it seriously.

MarEt Kith, Professor of Modification

Professor Kith emphasizes that she is not a genius, not a natural, not even particularly talented with the complicated mathematics of Modification. Everything she learned came from study, practice, effort, and hard work -- and there is no reason any student of hers can’t do the same. Tough but fair, Professor Kith takes pains to make herself available to students who need additional help or advice in her classes, and as a consequence often finds herself giving help and advice on matters less related to schooling as well.

Immiriam Mala, Professor of Intimation

Never lie to her about why you didn’t turn in your homework. Professor Mala is the counterpoint to Professor Loshakle -- ancient, stubborn, opinionated, and vocal. She, however, prides herself on knowing the facts. As a consequence she is quite welcoming of Sundered students, who she understands have no choice in being here and mostly mean no harm at all, and is one of their most vocal advocates within the Magicademy. Her blunt and unsparing mannerisms don’t necessarily make her the best advocate, of course.

Cassingale King, Professor of Sundering

The search for a Professor of Sundering was a difficult and miserable one, since anyone who knew enough about Sundering to teach it was absolutely admitting to studying and practicing it while it was forbidden. Professor King got the position by apparently not realizing that and showing up anyway. Barely two years out of Diatu herself, Professor King is viewed as too young for the position of Professor, and how does she know so much about Sundering at her age? Yet Professor King either doesn’t know or doesn’t care how others view her; she shows up each day ready and eager to teach a subject she is clearly passionate about.

Sicenzi Trent, Professor of Music

Professor Trent is the only Housemaster not also Professor of that House’s Curriculum; in fact, by all measures she is a mediocre wizard at best. Her skill, her talent, and her passion are all music. Professor Trent can play at least forty-five different instruments on the virtuoso level, and her compositions are famous throughout the Tenscore Kingdoms. Most importantly, though, she excels at igniting a passion in music within her students, coaxing even the most hardened hearts into finding expression in notes and song and matching even the most fumblefingered pupil with an instrument they can master. Gregarious, boisterous, and friendly, Professor Trent possesses a personality far too large for thin frame, which always surprises those who meet her for the first time.

Ire, Professor of History and Draconic Knowledge

Professor Ire is a very recent arrival to a very new position, for perhaps obvious reasons. On the one hand, his position recognizes the invaluable assistance he has given humankind in its struggle against his own people; on the other, the topics he covers are of intense and immediate relevance with two unkillable dragons hellbent on reclaiming dominion over all. He tends to be grumpy, but is surprisingly sociable despite all that.

Staff

Richard Willoughs, Head of Student Affairs

Determinedly nonmagical and proud of it, Wiloughs oversees the Student Affairs Office with curt aplomb and efficient insight. Exceptional at both personal work and delegation, Willoughs has integrated Makerion Keep and its inhabitants into his routines and procedures for housing, feeding, and generally minding students without so much as a blip. Every student speaks highly of Willoughs and his office… so long as they have never met him. Those who have wonder how a man who seems to hate students with a passion can ever manage to be in his position.

Dumaskis Porion, Head of Outreach

Diplomat and scholar, Porion handles diplomacy with the Tenscore Kingdoms and those powers that wish to maintain relations with Diatu Magicademy. Though not particularly old, the events of the Sundering have stressed him well past what he appears able to handle, and oftentimes he’s mistaken for an elder rather than a man still in his prime. Porion struggles to handle all his new duties and expanded old ones, but refuses to take on more help in a formal capacity.

Meliandre Tomekin, Head of Groundskeeping

Tomekin has spent several years revolutionizing groundskeeping through use of advanced magic and Forged constructs, and now spends most of her days lounging around or doing as she pleases while her servitors tidy up automatically. She only bestirs herself when someone creates a magical disaster that needs a real wizard to clean it up, tasks she approaches with downright relish for the challenge. So far, nothing has stumped her, and she doesn’t encourage students to take that as a challenge…

Alyse Lominia, Captain of the Striking Fists of Diatu and Head Student Bala-Inlota Coach

The magejock who thinks, breathes, and lives bala-inlota is a stereotype, and Lominia may very well be its source. As Head Coach, Lominia oversees the four student teams and their individual staff, and though ostensibly these games are just for fun, Lominia has driven the competition to new and scary heights in her quest to find and temper wizards who can one day take the field beside her as part of the Striking Fists. No less a soul than Headmaster Birony herself had to stop Lominia from hurling b-i-offense spells at random students to test their reactions, though no one seems to be able to stop her press-ganging promising athletes onto one of the student teams.

The Ghosts of Makerion Keep

Captain Mury Katsinger

Former Captain of the Keep Guard, Captain Katsinger dates back six centuries or so. His oath of honor prevents him ‘harassing’ the Ka students, and he is the first to step in whenever another ghost crosses the line, but this doesn’t stop the Captain from loudly and stalwartly explaining to anyone he can find how his antiquated viewpoints make much more sense than the modern ones and also history never should have kept going after he died.

Lady Aria

Appearing to be some lady of means and title, Lady Aria is a kind and gentle soul constantly weeping spectral blood from a sword wound in her chest. Students who get past that find her to be a charming and pleasant conversationalist or a helpful source of advice and wisdom. If she has a flaw, it is her incurable romanticism; she has a tendency to meddle in relationships, tries to set up students, and never counsels someone to leave their partner no matter how obviously they should.

“Anastara Diatu”

Not Anastara Diatu. The jury is out on whether he truly believes himself to be the Magicademy’s founder, or if he’s just playing one giant joke in an extremely competent manner. Students are advised to never, ever rely on him for any sort of advice relating to history or legacy, though his magic knowledge is surprisingly good.

Pikabu

Pikabu earned his name by his habit of testing visitors, and now residents, of Makerion Keep by taking the form of a circus clown and springing out of their wardrobes. Those who either take the joke in good humor or get revenge on him later are admitted to his circle of friends, to whom he drops interesting tidbits regarding the school and its inhabitants. None of them are ever wrong, but none of them are ever possible to follow up on in a responsible and rule-abiding manner, either.

Thomas

For some reason, Thomas appears to be the ghost of a massive tiger. He is perfectly erudite and capable of conversing at length, and indeed seems to possess wisdom and understanding that indicate he is not a tiger -- but nevertheless, he certainly appears to be one. Thomas’s one unfortunate habit is curling up on the beds of students, whether they are occupied or not.

REGARD

While in Diatu Magicademy, characters may earn positive regard from NPCS, most commonly as a result of monthly activities or adventures. Regard is a measure of how much that NPC will do for you as a concrete and meaningful favor -- while Professor Mala has a personal fondness for the know-it-all types, for example, only those who have earned her regard could coax her into teaching a unique spell outside of the normal lessons.

To spend regard, comment to this post with what effects you wish to achieve, and links to the regard awards you have earned. If you earned positive regard with Professor King on two separate occasions and wish to use both points, you would provide links to both comments in your post.

There are no hard-and-fast rules for how much regard equals how much benefit, save that more is always better. Spending one regard to learn information from Headmaster Birony might earn you a lengthy critique on your fashion choices, whereas spending ten regard could very well make you privy to the nature of Thinking Spells or the combined politics and thinking of every major player in the Sundered crisis. (But do note: if you follow Headmaster Birony's fashion advice, you will get some benefit! Spending regard is never a waste or a net negative.)
