Classes and Student Teaching

Classes and Student Teaching

The purpose of a Magicademy is teaching, of course, and so long as they are enrolled within it, students are expected to take and attend six classes per day, five days a week. This number has been fairly inviolate over the course of history, and has both tradition and proven efficacy to support it. The schedule sets aside mornings for instruction in the magical Curricula and afternoons for other subjects, emphasizing the primacy of magic in an aspiring wizard’s life while preventing any student from taking nothing but.

Each class is a semester long, with one midterm of some form and one final administered to judge student progress. Students begin in class 1, and for most classes may advance to high-numbered classes in sequence with each passing semester. Every magic class goes from 1 to 10, representing five solid years of education to become as masterful at that Curriculum as the Magicademy can make you, whereas many other classes may only reach 5 or 4 -- or in the case of niche subjects, no further levels beyond the first.

Each House has three required courses; each new student MUST have the first level of these three courses on their schedule in their initial semester, and to graduate each student MUST pass the full course series.

Gekronus Maius: Discovery, Etiquette, History of the Tenscore Kingdoms
    Valhudor: Fantastics, Music, Physics
Aer et Calculum: Thaumaturgy, Dialectical Logic, Astronomy
    Purifeul: Modification, Mathematics, Alchemy
Eiather: Intimation, Religion, one language of choice
Ka: Sundering, Law, History of Wizardry

Due to recent events, students are strongly, strongly encouraged to study Draconic Knowledge.

Student Teaching

Recognizing that many of the Sundered have valuable skills, knowledges, and life experiences to share with others, Diatu Magicademy allows those students to apply for a position as student teachers. This position not only counts for a course credit but also draws a modest salary, allowing a share of financial freedom to those who might otherwise have nothing but what Diatu Magicademy in its grace gives them. It may also help those who feel too old or too experienced to be in school among so many youths to feel more comfortable in the education environment.

To become a student instructor, a student must demonstrate suitable proficiency in an area of general applicability. (Thus, a history of their home world would not be valid, for example, though a course on strategy and tactics of a late medieval-fantasy world would be.) If their selection is accepted and they prove themselves worthy, they then prepare a syllabus and submit it for approval. Once approved, they may then teach the class in one afternoon slot of their choice.

Student teachers are routinely audited to make sure they are grading fairly and without bias, teaching useful information, and performing well in their other classes. Beyond this level of oversight, student teachers are generally free to conduct their lessons as they see fit.

Current student teachers and their classes are as follows:

Proposed class - Armed/unarmed combat. Magic isn't his first language, (he isn't Jasper after all) so Hendrik would teach people how to fight without their wand if it's lost or stolen. He still has his armor and can show folks how hand to hand combat works. And if he gets his hand on a sword or a wooden weapon or even a shield, that can be taught too.

You can take the knight out of the kingdom, but you can't take the kingdom out of the knight.

Or something along those lines.
